IELTS Writing Task 2 - School Subjects (Discussion Question)

Updated: Jan 30

Some people believe teenagers should focus on all subjects equally, whereas other people think that they should concentrate on only those subjects that they find interesting and they are best at.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. (9/12/2023)

SAMPLE ESSAY:

In contemporary education systems, there is an ongoing debate about whether teenagers should evenly distribute their attention across all subjects or concentrate solely on those they find most engaging and excel in . Both perspectives have their merits, but I personally lean towards the latter for the reasons below.

On the one hand, supporters of a balanced education contend that it equips teenagers with a versatile skill set  crucial for their future endeavors . Proficiency in , for instance, both analytical thinking from science subjects and communication skills from literature would be more beneficial for students to cope with the multifaceted challenges  of the modern world, compared to those only adept at  either area. Moreover, a well-rounded  education could allow teenagers to explore their potential and discover latent talents via exposure to a variety of subjects. As proof, many Vietnamese secondary school students, although initially disinterested in  arts, have discovered a passion for it later on through exposure to a balanced curriculum, leading them to pursue a career in a creative field.

On the other hand, proponents of specialization argue that teenagers should be allowed to concentrate on subjects they find most captivating in order to maximize individual potential and productivity. This is because when students are passionate about a particular subject, they are more likely to invest time and effort into mastering it. Specialization can also cultivate expertise , which is increasingly valued in the professional world, leading to greater career opportunities for these individuals. For example, teenagers with a strong inclination towards  computer science may benefit significantly from focusing on coding and programming languages. This in-depth knowledge , in turn, can enable them to have lucrative  career paths in technology-related fields.

In summary, while a balanced education equips students with a versatile skill set and encourages exploration, I believe that specialization is a finer approach as it would allow students to cultivate their expertise, potentially resulting in greater career opportunities.

BRAINSTORMING

Personal opinion: Students should concentrate on only those subjects that they find interesting and they are best at

Body 1: Arguments in favor of a balanced education

  • A balanced education gives teenagers a mix of important skills for their future (e.g. being good at both scientific thinking and communication is more useful than excelling in just one) → ability to handle complex challenges of today's world.

  • It also lets teenagers explore their abilities and find hidden talents through exposure to different subjects (e.g. In Vietnam, many high school students who weren't interested in arts at first discovered a love for it through a balanced curriculum)

Body 2: Arguments in favor of a specialized education + my personal opinion

  • A specialized education helps students reach their full potential because when students are passionate about something, they tend to put more time and effort into learning it

  • Specializing in a specific area can also make someone an expert, which is highly valued in jobs → greater opportunities (e.g. teenagers who really like computer science can benefit a lot from concentrating on it, as their in-depth knowledge may lead to well-paid jobs in technology)
