IELTS Writing Task 2 - Restoration Of Old Buildings (Agree or Disagree Question)

Updated: May 24

Restoration of old buildings in many cities involves enormous government expenditure. It would be more beneficial to spend this money to build new houses and roads.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY:

In recent years, the restoration of historic buildings in many cities has been a subject of ongoing debate. While some argue that the substantial government expenditure involved in such projects could be more beneficially utilized  in the construction of new houses and roads, I disagree with this notion for the following reasons.

On the one hand, proponents of allocating government funds to the construction of new houses and roads argue that these projects are essential for addressing contemporary societal needs . Building new houses addresses the pressing issue of housing shortages, particularly in rapidly expanding urban areas, contributing to improved living standards and community well-being. Additionally, investing in the construction of roads and infrastructure plays a key role in promoting efficient transportation of goods and people. The development of modern road networks, exemplified  by the expressways in countries like Japan or the United States, underscores  the significance of infrastructure in supporting economic activities and ensuring the seamless flow of commerce .

While investing in new facilities is undeniably essential for urban development, I firmly believe that the restoration of old buildings also holds immense importance and thus deserves enormous state funding. Firstly, preserving these structures could not only foster a sense of cultural identity  but also attract tourists, contributing to the local economy. For instance, the restoration of landmarks such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Taj Mahal in India has not only preserved historical heritage but also become a major source of revenue through tourism. Secondly, the restoration of old buildings can be a catalyst for urban revitalization . When historic districts are revitalized , more businesses will likely be established in these areas, which helps create more jobs and stimulate local economic growth.

In summary, while there is certainly a need to invest in new houses and roads, I disagree with the idea that redirecting government funds from restoration of old buildings towards these projects would yield greater benefits  for society.
