IELTS Writing Task 2 - Globalized Retail (Discussion Question)

Many different countries have most shops and products as the same. Some consider it a positive development, whereas others consider it negative.

Discuss both views and give your opinion. (18/05/2024)

SAMPLE ESSAY:

In today's globalized society, it is increasingly common to encounter  identical shops and products across various countries. While some individuals view this as a positive development, others believe it has detrimental implications . This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I lean towards the former.

On the one hand, the dominance of identical shops and products worldwide can have several negative consequences, chief of which is the potential loss of local cultures and traditions. This occurs because most global products follow standardized manufacturing and design procedures  of multinational brands that often disregard  cultural differences across nations. Additionally, the environmental impact of globalized retail is a growing concern. The transportation of goods over long distances often involves significant carbon emissions from gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles , which might exacerbate  air pollution and climate change.

On the other hand, I argue that the global prevalence  of similar shops and products should be seen as advantageous. Firstly, it enhances convenience and familiarity  for consumers, allowing them to easily find products that they know and trust whenever traveling abroad. For instance, international travelers often seek out well-established brands  like McDonald’s or Starbucks for consistent quality and service. Secondly, global companies are usually committed to  high quality and safety standards to maintain their brand reputation . As a result, consumers are guaranteed access to reliable and safe goods, significantly enhancing their satisfaction and trust in these brands.

In conclusion, although the globalization of shops and products poses certain challenges to  cultural diversity and the environment, I believe these are outweighed by the conveniences and quality assurances it offers.
