IELTS Writing Task 2 - Advertising (Agree or Disagree Question)

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

People are surrounded by all kinds of advertising. Some people believe that advertising has a negative effect on people’s lives.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ESSAY:

Nowadays, the drastic development of commercialization has given rise to a wide variety of advertisements in daily life. Concerning this, some individuals believe that the growth of advertising has had an adverse impact on people’s lives. Personally, I agree with this belief and will offer my opinion in the following essay.

On the one hand, there are certain notable merits that advertising can bring. First, advertisements are usually generated to notify customers of various features and functions that a product can offer for them. Thanks to these, consumers can make an informed choice whether to buy a type of goods that is particularly tailored to their personal needs. Second, the widespread application of advertising could help stimulate national economic growth. This is because customers tend to be attracted to elaborately and creatively designed advertisements and decide to purchase more commodities based on these. Consequently, the overall consumption rate would be boosted, thus gaining more profits for businesses and contributing to a growing economy.

On the other hand, I strongly believe that the drawbacks of the omnipresence of commercials outweigh its advantages. One significant issue could be the increasing exaggeration of many aspects of a product from these advertisements just to appeal to customers and generate more revenues. As a result, the level of customer satisfaction as well as reliability of a company’s merchandise can significantly diminish , which can probably discourage many customers from purchasing products of these enterprises again. Furthermore, numerous online commercials these days may display inappropriate content such as betting or gambling for children whose cognition has not fully developed. Therefore, if excessively exposed to it, children can be easily tempted into similarly harmful activities without sufficient parental attention, which can potentially ruin their whole future.

To recapitulate briefly, despite some benefits and convenience that the advertising industry has brought to the daily life of many individuals, I strongly believe that the negative effects of these advertisements as mentioned above are predominant .
